Mid-August Report of American League Baseball Plus Wild-Card Race

Image
After all #Major League Baseball games were played on the Saturday, August 11, 2018 schedule and the #dog days of summer have either ended or are still here, we have our usual questions to answer: Performance : How did the teams in the #American League #East and West do these last two weeks? Positions : Which team is in first place in the three American League divisions? How are the other teams in the AL East doing? Possibilities : How do things look regarding those four potential 100-win teams in the American League? Performance : How did the teams in the American League East and West do during the last two full weeks of July 29-August 4 and August 5-11? The first week began with the following AL East and other division statistics: Team           Wins      Losses    Score on #UBWS18 Scale Boston         73         33           +51.2 Yankees       66         37           +40.8 Tampa         53         53           +03.9 Toronto       47         56

American League East Division and Division Leaders Just Before the All-Star Game

The American League teams have finished the first two weeks of their July schedule, and it is time for the All-Star Game festivities. As we prepare for the rest of the regular season and anticipate the postseason, we have some main questions to answer: a. Performance (How did the teams in the American League do these last two weeks, especially in the East?) b. Positions (What team is in first place in each AL division? What are the positions of the teams in the AL East?) c. Potential Record (How do things look regarding those four potential 100-win AL teams?) 1. Performance of American League teams these past two weeks (How did the teams in the American League do these last two weeks, especially in the East?) 1.1 At the Beginning of the Month of July 1.1.1 In the AL East Division The Boston Red Sox are still in first place ahead of the New York Yankees. (I could not resist including this sentence here.) The first week of July began with the fol

Four Teams Midway Through MLB's 2018 Season With a +38 Score on the #UBWS18 Scale (Part II)

In the American League (AL) East and West Division pennant races, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, and the Seattle Mariners battle with the additional incentive of possibly winning at least one hundred (100) games. According to Wikipedia, "the 100-win threshold remains the hallmark of the best teams in a given season" and "To date, there have never been four 100-win Major League teams in a single season, and never more than two in a single league." In order to achieve at least one hundred (100) victories, a team would need at least a +38 score on the UBWS18 scale. At the end of June, these four teams had the following scores: Boston Red Sox         (+43.6 on the UBWS18 scale) New York Yankees    (+42.4 on the UBWS18 scale) Houston Astros          (+39.2 on the UBSW18 scale) Seattle Mariners        (+37.6 on the UBWS18 scale) As you can see, all four of t hese teams were way over the traditional +28 score on the UBWS1

Four Teams Midway Through MLB's 2018 Season With a +38 #UBWS18 Score

Four Teams Midway Through MLB's 2018 Season  With a +38 #UBWS18 Score What is more exciting than just watching the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees battle for the American League (AL) East Division pennant once again?  First, both teams have the realistic possibility of winning not only the East Division but also at least one hundred games!  Secondly, the Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners are also battling in the West Division of the same league, with both these teams also having the realistic possibility of winning not only the West Division but also at least one hundred games?  What is so great about all this? According to Wikipedia, "...the 100-win threshold remains the hallmark of the best teams in a given season...." "...To date, there have never been four 100-win Major League teams in a single season, and never more than two in a single league." I celebrated July 1 by spending my day, among other things, reviving my pr

I Am a Real Sports Fan of Professional New England Teams, Including the Boston Bruins.

A couple of Venezuelan friends helped me get this picture taken so that you could be assured that I really am a New England Professional Sports fan! If that previous sentence sounds strange, it may be because I am technology-challenged. Does that second sentence sound right? I even had a "wicked" hard time (New England type of expression) back in the old days when I had to do something relatively simple like snap a picture! I was "pretty" bad (another New England type expression) with those kinds of things back then, and I have only gotten worse. I am sure that all observant viewers will notice the four New England Professional teams' logos represented on my sweatshirt going clock-wise and starting at high noon: the Boston Bruins hockey team, the New England (formerly Boston) Patriots football team, the Boston Celtics basketball team, and right in the middle of the three-leaf design the Boston Red Sox baseball team.      I should probably clear up rig

Reactivating My Sports Blog in English

“Problems with the internet are not usually due to the incapacity of the internet but rather to the incapacity of the user.” As I mentioned in the brief previous entry to this blog, I was “trying to recuperate my four blogs,” one of which is this. I also mentioned a temporary, initial reordering unless I could "miraculously recuperate and connect” these blogs. Well, to paraphrase and apply what a friend once said to me, “Problems with the internet are not usually due to the incapacity of the internet but rather to the incapacity of the user.” I am happy to report that the miracle has occurred and my blogs are connected, have been recuperated, and are being reactivated. Actually, and more accurately, it is I, the user, who is reconnecting himself to them, recuperating his ability to work with them, and reactivating his communication by them; the blogs were doing and are doing just fine, thank you. So, once again, thank you for your patience. Since today is Father's

A Reactivated New Englander in Venezuela

Dear Reader, I am in the process of trying to recuperate my four blogs, two (one in English and one in Spanish) on Professional Sports in New England and two (one in English and one in Spanish) on Teaching English in Latin America. Apparently this is the only one that will let me write new entries. Therefore, unless I can miraculously recuperate and connect the other three blogs, I shall try to work out of this one and maybe eventually rename this one. Thank you for your patience during this transition. Published by Ambrose Powell Ambrose Powell, was born and raised in the New England area of the United States. He currently teaches English in Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela, and follows New England professional sports teams from there.
