NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT  June 30, 2013

Concerning the Boston Red Sox

Yesterday the Toronto Blue Jays (now 40-40) beat our first place #Boston Red Sox team (now 49-34) by the score of 6-2. This lowered the Red Sox's #UBWS (Unless Big Winning Streak) composite score to +30.8. Felix Doubront pitched six good innings, giving up just two runs. Alex Wilson also pitched well in his brief relief appearance. However, Junichi Tazawa and Craig Breslow, the second and third relievers, each gave up two runs. The batters got 10 hits, with Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroi, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia getting two each. However, Boston left a lot of runners on base, and two were thrown out at the plate. The team did not score until the seventh inning. They also committed two errors.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the Eastern Division of the American League looks like the following:

  • Boston  +30.8
  • Baltimore  +26.0
  • New York Yankees  +17.4
  • Tampa Bay +15.7
  • Toronto  +11.4
As we mentioned previously, we start to update our dialy UBSW statistics for each Major League Baseball team by following these steps:

  1. Determine the number of wins.
  2. Determine the number of losses.
  3. Subtract the number of losses from the number of wins to get a positive or negative total.
  4. Find the number of games remaining in the regular season.
  5. Determine the number for 10 percent of the remaining games.
Our next important step is to add the number from the third step (difference between wins and losses) with the number from the fifth step (10 percent of remaining games). This total will basically show you if a team is doing reasonably well or poorly, being over or under .500 and with a chance to do better. A prolonged negative score means that UBWS it will not go to the playoffs.

As you can see, I am showing you these steps as bullet points. You can easily make a chart with seven columns at the moment. First, put the name of the team in the first column. Then put the appropriate statistic in each column. Let's apply all of the above UBWS six steps to Boston and its division.

  • Boston:  49 wins, 34 losses, difference of +15, 79 games left, 10% of remaining games= 7.9, first total= +22.9, final total= 30.8
  • Baltimore:  46 wins, 36 losses, difference of +10, 80 games left, 10% of remaining games= 8.0, first total= +18.0, final total= 26.0
  • New York Yankees:  42 wins, 38 losses, difference of +4, 82 games left, 10% of remaining games= 8.2, first total= 12.2, final total= +17.4
  • Tampa Bay:  42 wins, 39 losses, difference of +3, 81 games left, 10% of remaining games= 8.1, first total= 11.1, final total= +15,7
  • Toronto: 40 wins, 40 losses, difference of 0, 82 games left, 10% of remaining games= 8.2, first total= 8.2, final total= 11.6
