June 25, 2013

On Monday, June 24, 2013, the Boston Red Sox had a well-deserved day off. However, four Major League Baseball games were played. The results from the two American League (AL) games indirectly affected Boston. Neither of them affected the Red Sox directly. Using our "Unless Big Winning Streak" (UBWS) statistics, Boston still maintains a +28.8 score. If the Red Sox's UBWS score remains close to this level for the rest of the season, it should be enough to get them into the 2013 playoffs.

As we stated above, the results from the two American League games did affect Boston, but only indirectly. Three Eastern division teams were involved in yesterday AL games. The Cleveland Indians won their game with the Baltimore Orioles; Cleveland's UBWS score rose from +17.1 to +18.4. Baltimore lost the game. Their UBWS score dropped slightly from +24.7 to +24.0. The Tampa Bay Rays won the other game. Their UBWS score rose from +16.7 to +18.0. The Toronto Blue Jays lost the game with Tampa. Toronto's UBWS score dropped from +17.1 to +15.4.

As you can see, Boston's day off did not directly affect its UBWS score. However, the two AL games did affect three of its direct divisional opponents. By losing, Baltimore and Toronto lost half a game in their statistics with relation to Boston. By winning, Tampa Bay gained a half game in their statistics related to Boston. Cleveland is not in the Eastern Division. However, it also gained ground on its opponents in the early fight for a wild-card spot.
