About the Boston Red Sox

Last night, the #BostonRedSox, now half a game back of the Tampa Bay Rays, in second place in the Eastern Division of the American League (with a record of 61 wins, 43 losses, and a UBWS (#UnlessBigWinningStreak) composite score of +29.6), lost their game against the Baltimore Orioles, three (3) games back of Boston, and holders of one of the American League wild cards for the playoffs (with a record of 58 wins, 46 losses, and a composite UBWS score of +23.7). The final score of the game was    6-0, in favor of Baltimore.

The Orioles scored the first two (2) runs of the game in the first inning, by a two-run home run. The Red Sox would not be able to score a run against Baltimore for the rest of the game. The Orioles added a run in the third inning, another run in the fifth inning, by a solo home run, another run in the seventh inning, also by a solo home run. The last run of the game came in on another solo home run in the eighth inning.

Boston's John Lackey pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five (5) runs. Drake Britton relieved him and pitched a scoreless inning. José de la Torre pitched most of the ninth inning, allowing the final Baltimore home run.

Boston's batters had only four (4) hits against Baltimore. Jacoby Ellsbury had two (2) hits, and Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz one (1) hit each. The other Red Sox batters could not get any hits off of Chris Tillman, Baltimore's starting pitcher, or the two (2) relievers who followed him.

Yesterday in the Eastern Division of the American League, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Toronto all won their games. Boston and the New York Yankees lost their games.

Today's game is the second game in this three-game series between the Red Sox and the Orioles, the two (2) present wild-card teams for the American League playoffs. The expected starting pitchers are Ryan Dempster for Boston and Scott Feldman for Baltimore.

By not winning last night, the Boston Red Sox remain nine (9) wins away from their first season objective of winning more than the 69 victories that last year's team achieved.
