NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 10, 2013

 About the Boston Red Sox

Tuesday night, after a wild beginning, the #BostonRedSox (now with 55 wins and 37 losses), leader of the Eastern Division of the American League, beat the Seattle Mariners (now with 40 wins and 50 losses) by the final score 11-8. Last night's win raised Boston's composite score to +32.0 according to the UBWS (#UnlessBigWinningStreak) statistics.

The game went back and forth during the first four (4) innings. The Red Sox starting pitcher, Allen Webster, gave up two (2) runs in the first inning, and Boston responded with a run in the top of the second inning. Webster allowed three (3) more runs in the bottom of the second inning, and Boston responded with five (5) runs in the top of the third inning. Strangely, Boston's manager sent Webster back out to pitch in the bottom of the third inning. He promptly gave up two (2) runs, with Alfredo Aceves' help with the second run.

Things were looking bad for the Red Sox. The team had come from behind to take a 6-5 lead, only to give it back to Seattle with those two (2) third-inning runs. However, in the top of the fourth inning, Boston scored another run to tie the game 7-7. An inning later, Jackie Bradley pleasantly surprised me by hitting a solo home run to give the Red Sox the lead 8-7. Both teams then calmed down until the eighth inning. Boston scored three (3) more runs, and Seattle could only answer with one run. That was the game.

Five (5) Red Sox relievers (Alfredo Aceves, Craig Breslow, Andrew Bailey, Junichi Tazawa, and Koji Uehara) combined to pitch 6.2 good innings, allowing just that one (1) eighth-inning run. Last night, Boston's batters had sixteen (16) hits, including five (5) home runs and three (3) doubles. David Ortiz had four hits, including a big second-inning home run. Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and José Iglesias had two (2) hits each. David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli, Jackie Bradley, and Shane Victorino each had a home run, in that order. Seven (7) different players batted in at least one (1) run.

Yesterday, in the Eastern Division, Boston and Tampa Bay won their games. Baltimore, the Yankees, and Toronto all lost.

Tonight the Red Sox play the third game of their four-game series in Seattle's ballpark. This is also the sixth of ten (10) consecutive road games for Boston. Felix Doubront is expected to start for the Red Sox and Aaron Harang for the Mariners.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the Eastern Division is the following:

  • Boston  +32.0
  • Tampa Bay  +25.2
  • Baltimore  +19.2
  • Yankees  +17.9
  • Toronto  +4.6
Using a vertical chart, let's apply the UBWS statistics to the Boston Red Sox.

  • Boston
  • Wins= 55
  • Losses= 37
  • Difference of +18
  • Remaining Regular-Season Games= 70
  • 10% of Remaining Regular-Season Games= 7.0
  • First Total = +25.0 (18 + 7.0)
  • Number of Games Behind Division Leader= 0
  • Number of Games Behind Two Wild-Card Leaders= 0
  • Better of Two Previous Numbers= 0
  • 10% of Remaining Regular Season Games= 7.0
  • Second Total= +7.0 (7.0 - 0)
  • Final Composite Score= +32.0 (25.0 + 7.0)
We mentioned yesterday that three (3) teams from the Eastern Division (Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Yankees) are constantly competing against each other to obtain second place in their division, which means getting closer to first-place Boston or winning a wild card for the playoffs. Tampa Bay, three and a half (3.5) games behind Boston, has quietly risen to be at least two (2) games ahead of both Baltimore and the Yankees. Let's look at Tampa Bay's UBWS statistics.

  • Tampa Bay
  • Wins= 51
  • Losses= 40
  • Difference of +11
  • Remaining Regular-Season Games= 71
  • 10% of Remaining Regular-Season Games= 7.1
  • First Total= +18.1 (11 + 7.1)
  • Games Behind Divisional Leader= -3.5
  • Games Behind Wild-Card Leaders= 0
  • Best of Two Previous Numbers= 0
  • 10% of Remaining Regular-Season Games=7.1
  • Second Total= 7.1 (7.1 - 0)
