NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 4, 2013

Concerning the Boston Red Sox

Wednesday night the first place #Boston Red Sox (now 52-34) beat the San Diego Padres (now 40-44) by the score of 2-1. This raised the Red Sox's #UBWS (Unless Big Winning Streak) composite score to 33.2. Jon Lester pitched seven (7) good innings, giving up just one (1) run. Junichi Tazawa pitched a good eighth inning. Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second victory to go with five (5) saves as a closer. The Boston batters got nine (9) hits, with Dustin Pedroia and Mike Carp getting two (2) hits each. The score was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, when manager John Farrell decided to sent Jonny Gomes to the plate to bat for third baseman Brandon Snyder. Gomes hit a home run over the Green Monster in left field to give Boston a 2-1 victory.

Yesterday, in the American League East Division, Boston, Baltimore and the Yankees won. Tampa Bay and Toronto lost.

Today the Red Sox receive the San Diego Padres in the third game of their three-game interleague series. Allen Webster is exected to start for Boston.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the East Division is the following:

  • Boston  +33.2
  • Baltimore  +26.4
  • Yankees  +19.1
  • Tampa Bay  +17.4
  • Toronto  +7.1
As we mentioned previously, we update our daily UBWS stats for each Major League Baseball team by following these inital steps:

  1. Determine number of wins.
  2. Determine number of losses.
  3. Subtract number of losses from number of wins.
  4. Find number of games remaining in the regular season.
  5. Determine ten (10) per cent of remaining games.
  6.  Add the numbers from the third and fifth steps.
  7. Determine how many games a team is back of the division leader.
  8. Determine how many games a team is back of the top contenders for the two wild-card spots for the playoffs.

Our next important step is to decide which of the two previous numbers is better. This choice will show if a team needs to win the division title or a wild card to get into the playoffs.

Now let's apply all of the above UBWS steps to Boston. We shall continue to use the vertical chart.

  • Boston
  • Wins= 52
  • Losses= 34
  • Difference of +18
  • Games Left= 76
  • 10% of Games Left= 7.6
  • First Total= +25.6 (18 + 7.6)
  • Games Back of Division Leader= 0. Boston is the division leader.
  • Games Back of Wild-Card Leaders= 0. As division leader, Boston is not presently fighting for wild card.
  • 0= Better of two previous numbers
  • Final total= +33.2
