NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 3, 2013

Concerning the Boston Red Sox

Tuesday night the first place #Boston Red Sox (now 51-34) beat the San Diego Padres (now 40-44) by the score of 4-1. This raised the Red Sox's #UBWS (Unless Big Winning Streak) composite score to +32.4. John Lackey (now 6-5) pitched eight (8) good innings, giving up just one (1) run. He now has an ERA of 2.81. Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save as a reliever. The Boston batters got nine (9) hits, with Jacoby Ellsbury, David Ortiz, Jonny Gomes, and José Iglesias getting two (2) hits each. In the third inning, third baseman Brandon Snyder drove in three (3) of Boston's four (4) runs. The Red Sox added another run in the sixth inning.

Yesterday in the East Division of the American League Boston, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees won their respective games. Baltimore and Toronto lost their games.

Tonight the Red Sox receive the San Diego Padres in the second game of a three-game interleague series. Jon Lester is expected to start for Boston.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the Eastern Division of the American League is the following:

  • Boston  +32.4
  • Baltimore  +25.6
  • Tampa Bay  +19.6
  • Yankees  +18.3
  • Toronto  +9.3

As we mentioned previously, we start to update our daily UBWS atatistics for each #Major League Baseball team by following the following steps:

  1. Determine number of wins.
  2. Determine number of losses.
  3. Subtract number of losses from number of wins.
  4. Find number of games remaining in regular season.
  5. Determine 10% of remaining games in regular season.
  6. Add the number from third step to number from fifth step.
  7. Determine how many games a team is behind the leader in its division.
Our next important step is to determine how many games a team is behind the leaders for the two wild-card spots in the playoffs. If a team is too far back behind the leader of the division and the leaders for the two wild-card spots, it will not classify for the playoffs.

As you see, we are showing you these steps as bullet points. If you prefer, you can easily make a horizontal chart with eight (8) columns for the moment.Put the team name in the first column and the appropriate statistic in each additional column to the right. If you prefer a vertical (bullet point) chart, which we shall use today, place the team name as a title, and then the appropriate statistic in each row underneath. Now let's apply the above steps to the Boston Red Sox:

  • Boston
  • Wins= 51
  • Losses= 34
  • Difference of +17
  • Games Left= 77
  • 10% of Games Left= 7.7
  • Total A: (Difference + 10%)= +24.7
  • Games Behind Division Leader= 0
  • Games Behind Wild-Card Leaders= 0
  • Final Score: +32.4
If you would like to see these statistics for another Major League Baseball team, just let me know.
