NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 6, 2013

Concerning the Boston Red Sox

Friday night the first place #BostonRedSox (now 54-34) beat the Los Angeles Angels (now 41-45) in Los Angeles by the score of 6-2. This raised the Red Sox'x #UBWS (Unless Big Winning Streak) composite score to +34.8. Boston's pitchers, both starters and relievers, continue to pitch well recently. This time Felix Doubront gave Boston 6.2 good innings, giving up just two (2) runs. He kept the Red Sox in the game against Angel's starter C.J. Wilson. Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa, and Koji Uehara kept the Angels off the coreboard for the rest of the game. The Boston Red Sox batters contributed thirteen (13) hits, at least one (1) from each of the starters and two (2) from Daniel Nava, Brandon Snyder, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The score was close, 3-2 in favor of Boston in the top of the eighth inning. Boston manager John Farrell sent David Ortiz, on his day off, to bat for Brandon Snyder. Big Papi responded with a two-run homer to deep right field. An inning later Mike Napoli hit a solo home run to deep center field.

Yesterday, in the American League East Division, Boston, Tampa Bay, the Yankees, and Toronto all won. Baltimore lost to the Yankees 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Today the Red Sox play the Angels in the secon game of their series and second game on this road trip for them. Ryan Dempster is expected to start for Boston, and Jerome Williams for the Angels.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the Eastern Division of the American League looks like this:

  • Boston  +34.8
  • Baltimore  +24.0
  • Yankees  +22.7
  • Tampa Bay  +21.0
  • Toronto  +7.7
As we mentioned previously, we update our daily UBWS statistics for each Major League Baseball team by following these steps:

  1. Determine number of wins.
  2. Determine number of losses.
  3. Subtract number of losses from number of wins to get positive or negative score.
  4. Figure out number of games remaining for team in regular season.
  5. Determine ten (10) per cent of number of games remaining for team in regular season.
  6. Add the number from the third step (difference between wins and losses) to the number from the fifth step (10 per cent of remaining games for team in regular season).
  7. Determine how many games a team is behind its divisional leader.
  8. Determine how many games a team is behind the leaders for the two wild-card spots in the playoffs.
  9. Take the better of the numbers from steps seven and eight.
  10. Use same 10 per cent figure of remaining regular season games for team from step five.
Our next important step is to subtract the number from step nine from the 10 per cent figure of remaining games for team in regular season. The result will show if a team has a good chance to win the division title or a wild card to get into the playoffs.

Using a vertical chart, let's apply all the previous steps to the Boston Red Sox team.

  • Boston
  • Wins= 54
  • Losses= 34
  • Difference of +20
  • Games left= 74
  • 10 % of games left= 7.4
  • First total: +20 + 7.4 = +27.4
  • Games back of division leader= 0
  • Games back of top wild-card contenders= 0
  • Better number from previous two figures= 0
  • 10% of remaining games= 7.4
  • Second total:  7.4 - 0 = 7.4
  • Final total= +34.8
Can you guess how I now get the final composite score? Would like to see these statistics for any other Major League Baseball team?
