NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 7, 2013

About the Boston Red Sox

Saturday night the #BostonRedSox (now with 54 wins and 35 losses), leaders of the Eastern Division of the American League, almost beat the Los Angeles Angels (now with 42 wins and 45 losses) in their stadium by the score of 7-3. Things looked lost for the Angels, with two (2) outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. However, the Angels rallied to score four (4) runs to tie the game, and later they won the game in the eleventh inning by the final score of 9-7.

Last night's loss dropped Boston's composite UBWS (#UnlessBigWinningStreak) score to +33.6. Boston's pitchers, both starters and relievers, had been pitching well. This time Ryan Dempster pitched 6.1 good innings, allowing three (3) runs. Andrew Miller and Andrew Bailey both pitched well in relief. Everything was all set for closing out the ninth inning and winning the game. However, Alex Wilson and Koji Uehara were not able to keep the Angels from scoring four (4) runs and tying the game. The last of the four (4) runs scored on a throwing error by Boston. Later Craig Breslow came in to pitch, and one inning later he served up the home-run pitch to Josh Hamilton, giving the Angels the comeback victory. Boston's batters contributed twelve (12) hits. Four (4) Boston batters had one (1) hit each, Dustin Pedroia and Jarrod Saltalamacchia two (2) hits each, and Daniel Nava four (4) hits.

Yesterday in the American League's Eastern Division Tampa Bay and the Yankees won their respective games. Boston, Baltimore, and Toronto all lost.

Tonight the Red Sox play the third game of their series in Los Angeles, their third game in a ten-game road trip. John Lackey is expected to pitch for Boston, and Jered Weaver for the Angels.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for every team in the Eastern Division is the following:
  • Boston  +33.6
  • Yankees  +24.0
  • Baltimore  +22.3
  • Tampa Bay  +22.3
  • Toronto  +6.0
We update our daily UBWS statistics for each Major League Baseball team by following these steps:
  1. Determine the number of wins.
  2. Determine the number of losses.
  3. Subtract the number of losses from the number of wins, to get a positive or negative score.
  4. Determine the number of games left for the team in the regular season.
  5. Determine ten (10) per cent of number of games left for team in the regular season.
  6. Add the number from the third step to the number of the fifth step.
  7. Determine how many games back the team is from the Divisional leader.
  8. Determine how many games back a team is from the two wild-card spots for the postseason.
  9. Choose the best number from the two (2) previous steps.
  10. Use the same number from the fifth step, the 10% of remaining games.
  11. Subtract the better number from the ninth step, from the number from the tenth step.
Our last important step is to add the totals from the sixth step and the eleventh step to arrive at the UBWS composite score for the team.

Now let's use a vertical chart to apply all the previous steps to our Boston team.
  • Boston
  • Wins= 54
  • Losses= 35
  • Difference of +19
  • Remaining games in regular season= 73
  • 10% of remaining games= 7.3
  • First Total= +26.3 (19 + 7.3)
  • Games behind divisional leader= 0
  • Games behind wild-card leaders= 0
  • Better number of two previous steps= 0
  • 10% of remaining games in regular season= 7.3
  • Second Total= 7.3 (7.3 - 0)
  • Final composite score= +33.6 (26.3 + 7.3)
If you wish to know what the statistics would be for any other Major League Baseball team, let us know. In the next report, we hope to include the UBWS statistics for one or more teams competing with Boston in the Eastern Division.
