NEW ENGLAND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS REPORT July 2, 2013

Concerning the Red Sox

Sunday, the first place #Boston Red Sox (now 50-43) beat the Toronto Blue Jays (now 41-41) by the score of 5-4. The Red Sox won the four-game series 3 games to 1. Boston's win, coupled with Monday's results, raised their #UBWS (Unless Big Winning Streak) composite score to +31.6. Ryan Dempster pitched five good innings, giving up just two runs. Craig Breslow, Alex Wilson, and Andrew Miller also pitched well in relief, although Breslow allowed one run to score. Boston's new closer, Koji Uehara gave up a ninth-inning homerun that tied the game 4-4. The Red Sox batters made 9 hits, with Daniel Nava and Brandon Snyder gettings two hits each. Boston scored three runs in the second inning and one in the fifth winning. The Red Sox scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning due to an error by the Toronto first baseman.

Yesterday, in the Eastern Division of the American League, Boston and Baltimore had a day off. Toronto, Tampa and the New York Yankees all won their games.

Tonight the Boston Red Sox receive the San Diego Padres in a three-game interleague series. John Lackey is expected to be the starting pitcher for Boston.

As of today, the composite UBWS score for each team in the Eastern Division of the American League looks like the following:

  • Boston  +31.6
  • Baltimore  +26.8
  • Tampa Bay  +17.8
  • New York Yankees  +16.5
  • Toronto  +10.5
As we mentioned previously, we update our daily UBWS statistics for each Major League Baseball team by using the following initial steps:

  1. Determine number of wins.
  2. Determine number of losses.
  3. Subtract number of losses from numer of wins to get positive or negative score.
  4. Find number of games left in regular season.
  5. Determine 10 percent number of remaining games in regular season.
  6. Add the number from third step to number from fifth step.
Our next important step is to determine how many games a team is behind the leader of the division. This information is especially important if a team is looking for a wild-card spot for the playoffs. If a team is too far behind the leader of the division, it will not earn one of these two spots.

As you can see, we are showing you these steps as bullet points. You can easily make a chart with eight columns for the moment. Put the name of the team in the first column and then the appropriate statistic in each column. Now let's apply all of the above UBWS steps to Boston and its division:

  • Boston:  wins= 50, losses= 34, difference of +16, games left= 78, 10% of games left= 7.8, first total= +23.8, games back of leader= 0, final total= +31.6
  • Baltimore: wins= 47, losses= 36, difference of +11, games left= 79, 10% of games left= 7.9, first total= +18.9, games back of leader= -2.5, final total= +26.8
  • Tampa Bay:  wins= 44, losses= 39, difference of +5, games left= 79, 10% of games left= 7.9, first total= +12.9, games back of leader= -5.5, final total= +17.8
  • New York Yankees:  wins= 43, losses= 39, difference of +4, games left= 80, 10% of games left= 8.0, first total= +12.0, games back of leader= -6.0, final total= +16.5
  •  Toronto:  wins=41, losses= 41, difference= 0, games left= 80, 10% of games left= 8.0, first total= 8.0, games back of leader= -8.0, final total= +10.5
